What to Expect from Legal Cannabis Retailers

The Golden state has grown so much since recreational cannabis legalization in 2018, and now you can find retail shops on every corner. If you are new to the cannabis scene or have simply never gotten cannabis from a legal retailer before, we’re here to guide you through the process.

First off, you may have a different experience than the guy next to you, dependent on if you are a new recreational consumer, a medical marijuana patient with a doctor’s recommendation, or a participant in the California Department of Public Health’s Medical Marijuana Identification Card Program. While people in each of these categories may have different purchasing experiences, the overall experience will be somewhat uniform. Here is what you need to know before purchasing cannabis from a legal retailer for the first time.

Can I still purchase medical marijuana?

Yes, you can. In fact, there are actually benefits to remaining a medical marijuana patient in California’s recreational market. If you want to go above the limits of what recreational cannabis regulations allow, you will still need to get a California doctor to write you a recommendation.

How much money can I expect to pay?

Like any retail store, a dispensary will offer a wide variety of items that will range in price depending on what your preferred form of cannabis is. Just expect taxes to bring your total to over 20 percent higher than the sticker price.

How do I get into a recreational dispensary?

All you need is a government-issued ID and you’re set. Not only will your ID prove that you are of legal age, but it also provides the dispensary with a quick mechanism to add you to their tracking system. While the sound of a tracking system may make you a little weary, your spot in the system provides a way to make sure you don’t exceed your daily purchasing limits and get the dispensary in trouble with the state.

What products will be available in a retail dispensary?

All of your favorite products will still be available. You can expect to see many of the same things in a recreational dispensary as you have seen in medical dispensaries: cannabis flower, vape pens, concentrates, edibles, as well as paraphernalia, clothing, and more. However, a few things will be different due to some of the laws California has surrounding recreational cannabis. Edibles are capped at 10 mg doses of THC in packages of 100 mg. Due to this, some patients who are used to higher potency products may struggle to go without the dosage they have gotten used to. Also, as a consumer, you are only allowed to purchase one ounce of marijuana a day. If that’s not enough for you, you may want to see a doctor so you can obtain a doctor’s recommendation or medical marijuana card. With a medical marijuana ID, you’ll be able to purchase more.
